Waking Life2023

Working on the construction of lakeside Knetterbar, a specialised pavilion space at Waking Life, as part of the team of Eveline de Winter & Bram van Waas. Developing a diaphanous and elegant structure, standing as one of many unique performance and interaction spaces across the site, but one designed to be rarely noticed amongst the natural lakeside fauna; a space to be perceived, rather than sought.

To ensure it’s existence as an undisclosed space, fabrics and materials were chosen and layered through a number of iterations (in part due to ever-changing prevailing weather, and in part to utilise the small array of locally-sourced materials available) to create an almost camouflaged subtlety during daylight - revealing little untoward the eclecticism of the decoration and performances occurring within.

For its own identity amongst the many intricately lit night time lakeside installations, a hidden red PVC material layer was introduced that allows the structure to naturally illuminate into a more dramatic and engaging set piece in darkness. This layer also helps achieve practical requirements in adequate airflow and waterproofing, whilst increasing opacity and thus privacy and the element of mystique.
